The Spy Who Dumped Me: Don't Break Up With This Film!
The Spy Who Dumped Me is the female buddy comedy I have been waiting for since Bridesmaids. Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon are a dream as best friends Audrey and Morgan. They are smart, hysterical and aren't afraid to make jokes about sex or pooping- exactly like real women. It's refreshing to see female leads who lift each other up and are on the same page throughout the film and their chemistry as friends is both endearing and believable. Their friendship is the real love story-although dishy Sam Heughen doesn't hurt to look at and is surprisingly capable as the possibly good, possibly bad secret agent Sebastian. Kate McKinnon somehow manages to outdo herself in this film and was by far the best part. Her comedic timing and delivery is so on point and so funny that even though she's basically in every scene I still wanted to see more of her.
This story is a wild ride and while it is totally unrealistic, especially that Audrey and Morgan don't die in the first shoot out, it's so laugh out loud funny I didn't care. In fact, I thought it was all the better for being a campy take on the spy genre. The combination of comically over the top action scenes and an actually comprehensive plot makes this a pretty great movie. Just when the film is about to cross over into stupidity, a nicely timed plot twist comes along to swing it back on track. I was also kept guessing until the end about what was going to happen, which made it even more entertaining. Overall: great laughs, great leading ladies, great film!
FRANKLY: A MUST SEE FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS FEMALE FRIENDSHIP AND LAUGHING UNTIL THEY CRY. 4/5.
PS: *F OFF*, Rotten Tomatoes, for giving this film only a 40%. Your "tomatometer critics" are probably the same boys who gave Mission: Impossible-Fallout a 97%. This is exactly why more female representation is needed in film critique.
